I want to introduce you to one of my favorite peopleRoberto.
I met Roberto when I volunteered with Amgios de las Américas
in Cotopaxi, Ecuador.
Roberto is eight years old and lives in the village of Locoa
Santa Marianita. I have never met anyone like him. The reason
I find him so special is, to me, he personifies youth. He is
always full of energy. Well, he is a bit sluggish in the morning,
but after that, look out! I'd hate to see what caffiene would
do to this kid.
He always has something to say, something to do, or something
new to show you. One of his more memorable innovations was hitting
clods of dirt with a stick. He said, "Estuart, mira. Es
muy divertido." Very amusing indeed! He is what little
kid should be. In particular, I can recall his laugh and his
shriek when you chase after him. He never gives anyone a moment
of peace. That is not to say he' s annoying, he just enjoys
being active. One of his favorite tricks was to call Eric, my
partner, "Big Foot" until Eric gave in and began to
chase him.
My
favorite "Roberto moment" was one day when his mother
was in the yard doing chores and he was laying down resting.
She asked him to give her a hand and he relpied that he was
comfortable. She looked to me and said "Vale poco,"
(he's worth little). All I could do was laugh.
Roberto
is the little brother you wish you had. He's the crazy kid down
the street who makes you laugh because he's just so alive. His
burro impersonation I would give anything to hear, and his unwashed
smell is priceless. One of my favorite songlines comes from
"Leash" by Pearl Jam. "Delight in your youth"
is the phrase and Roberto is the living proof. He will always
have a knack for humorously stating the obvious and making you
so mad you smile. I will never for get him.
Roberto
gave me a tape of Ecuadorian music before I left. In reality,
he gave me a great deal more. For that I will always be grateful.
