Sheldon Lake Community Service Project and Country Assignment Party

Sheldon Lake State Park & Environmental Learning Center is a 2,800 acre outdoor education and recreation facility located in northeast Harris County. The reservoir levees encompass 1,200 acres, of which 800 are permanently inundated and 400 acres are marsh and swampland. Formerly in the "country," Sheldon Lake has survived a tremendous influx of urbanization over the past 50 years as Houston has grown. Sheldon Lake is now a green and blue "oasis" for wildlife and people on the edge of Texas' largest city.

Our AMIGOS volunteers will spend 4 hours making improvements to the park. Parents are encouraged to join in. Work can include native prairie restoration, trail surfacing, exotic vegetation control, tree planting, composting, wildscape gardening and maintenance, and light construction. The volunteers will gain exposure to outdoor work and group project activitiy simliar in nature to many of our projects in Latin America.

At the end of the event, we will announce the country assignment for each volunteer.
