The AMIGOS organization has over the years developed the following
policies and procedures in order to best serve the health and safety of
the volunteers. |
| General Health Criteria |
To support our priority of
keeping volunteers and project staff safe and healthy in Latin America,
AMIGOS requires participants to meet its General Health Criteria.
|
| Standards of
Personal Conduct & Community Behavior |
Each AMIGOS volunteer and
his/her parents should understand that the rules known as the AMIGOS Standards of Personal Conduct and Community
Behavior apply during all phases of AMIGOS participation. The
Standards of Personal Conduct and Community Behavior are also discussed
in the AMIGOS Volunteer Handbook. These rules are for the protection of
the volunteers; there is zero tolerance for their violation.
|
| Immunizations |
Immunizations are required or
strongly recommended for all AMIGOS
volunteers. AMIGOS follows the Centers for Disease Control and
Prevention (CDC) guidelines in establishing its volunteer vaccine requirements. AMIGOS
will mail you any updates specific to your project area and country.
For more information, consult your doctor. The cost of immunizations is
not covered in the participation fee.
|
| Health
Precautions |
You may also want to consult
the Center
for Disease Control web site and the various country alerts for
their recommendations on the prevention of Traveler's Diarrhea and
other advice.
|
| Medical
Insurance |
The cost of the program (Family
Participation Fee) includes the cost of short-term medical insurance
for the volunteer during the project.
|
| Personal
First-Aid Supplies |
You will need to economize on
your packing, so there is no need for a lifetime supply of first-aid
items; however, a zip lock bag with a few items may come in
handy. A suggested list will be distributed to volunteers.
