Corbett Bishop (March 19, 1971 - May 1, 2009) was an Amigos
volunteer in the summers of 1986 and 1987 while attending Lamar High
School in Houston. He attended an information session with
a female friend who encouraged him to apply. His first
assignment was in the Dominican Republic where he lived and worked with
a large family in a rural community. He was
profoundly affected by the experience and signed up to be an Amigo the
following year. His second assignment in Ecuador was very
different but just as satisfying to his caring, adventurous
nature. Upon his return that same summer, his family traveled to
Africa with friends. Corbett fell in love with the place and
returned on his own the following year, ultimately making it his
permanent home and raising his children there.
Corbett was born
in Austin and raised in Houston, attending Esperanza, West University
Elementary, Pershing Middle School, and Lamar High School. He graduated
from Colby College in Maine in 1992 with a degree in World Literature
and Poetry.
He began his career as a climbing guide with Scott Fischer's Mountain
Madness in Seattle. He climbed Mount Kilimanjaro over
100 times, leading groups from all over the world. He
later worked for Wes Crause's African Environments in Tanzania.
After several years of guiding for others, he launched Corbett Bishop
Safaris in 1996, sha ring with
his many clients the wonders of
Africa. The venture thrived until his unexpected death from
an undiagnosed condition in 2009.
In Africa he
founded a non-profit organization, Ol Tukai Conservancy, whose mission
it was to stop the poaching of wild game in National Parks, and to
assist the Masai people of Ol Tukai in educating their
children. Learning of his passing, many Masai walked
the long distance from Ol Tukai to Corbett's home in Arusha to honor
him and bid him farewell. He leaves behind a son Luca, daughter
Ella, mother Cindy Bishop, father Rod Bishop, stepfather David
Donnelly, and numerous friends and admirers all over the
world.
Amigos established the Corbett Bishop
Humanitarian Scholarship in the
Spring of 2011 to assist a volunteer with a demonstrated need and who
is committed in heart, body and mind to full participation in the
program. It is the hope of Amigos de las Americas and his
family that future Amigos volunteers will be inspired by the life of
Corbett Bishop to live fearlessly, with an open heart, so as to leave
the world better because they were in it.
